Full Description
In Area 10, two isolated cremations were excavated during the work in 2003 (the other is ELM1401). This cremation was within a shallow pit less than 1m in diameter containing 35 sherds of pottery representing several vessels. The pottery sherds had been deliberately placed vertically (on their edges) within the fill of the cremation, which is unusual and may be associated with some kind of cremation ritual.
The position of these two cremations raises questions about the existence of field boundaries within this period in Area 10. Both this and ELM1401 are close to later ditches and may support the interpretation that the field system in this area did indeed exist in the Early Iron Age, although the evidence is unclear. For further evidence see GRP142. <1>
