Full Description

One of five inhumation burials of Roman date were excavated in Area 6 parallel with the western boundary of one of the Roman fields. This is one of two particularly deep adult graves (approximately a meter in depth). The other is ELM1395. No bone material survived. The wood of the coffins was not identifiable but was probably oak. Iron nails from the coffins remained. There were no grave goods and the burials were only dateable by occasional sherds of Roman pottery in the grave fills. <1>
