Full Description
A deep rectangular pit or shaft (BF31) was found that was 3m deep and had been cut through the upper sandy gravel subsoil into a deposit of fine sand below. If this feature had been left open for any period of time, its sides would have required some kind of support, although no trace of a lining was found. Finds from this pit dated the upper fill to the 2nd or early 3rd-century, although finds from the lower fill suggested an earlier date of Late Iron Age to early Roman. A quantity of carbonised plant remains including hazel, broom, spike rush, nettles, cabbage and mint was found, as well as cereal remains.<1>
