Full Description

Apart from the many shallow ditches that were found across Site B that probably represent palisade trenches or are associated with enclosures, a substantial ditch CF16 was found, aligned NW to SE. This could be traced as a cropmark for several hundred metres and seems likely to mark an important border in this landscape. To the west of this, many cropmarks of Late Iron Age/Roman field ditches are known. However, to the north and east, only a few cropmarks of ditches are known and these are post-medieval in date.

The ditch was about 1m deep, and between 2-3m wide. Few datable finds were uncovered from the lowest fills, but the ditch cut through two ovens on Site C (MCC2895 and MCC2896), which although not firmly dated are probably Roman in date. The mid to upper fill of the ditch can be dated to the 2nd or early 3rd century, based on the pottery and two 2nd century coins (MCC2898 and MCC2899).<1>
