Full Description

One of four Roman inhumation burials (see also MCC2890, MCC2891 and MCC2892) uncovered in 2001 at the Topfield site, Rawstorn Road. All four features were shallow and were covered by at least 1m of topsoil containing residual Roman pottery. These burials are thought to be part of the Roman cemetery at the adjacent St Mary's Hospital site. <1><2><3>

Feature 4, an adult Roman inhumation in the northern end of Trench 2 at 1.1m below ground level, possibly cutting into an earlier (quarrying?) ditch (F8). The JCB bucket removed some loose bones by accident but the skull was complete and in situ. The inhumation was not totally excavated and the loose bones were collected and re-buried. At least two nails were recorded near the skull suggesting that the inhumation was interred in a coffin. However, there was no clear grave cut. Fragments of later Roman pottery was found in this feature. The report suggests this may have been a second, later, inhumation (MCC2891) as there were too many bones for one inhumation.
