Full Description

A watching brief during the excavation of a pit for a floodlight bunker in front (and to the south of) of the Castle Keep produced 20 pieces of human bone.<1>

Previous excavations between 1931-33 revealed 'many' inhumation burials (MCC9291), overlying the medieval chapel (MCC2084) and barbican (MCC2086). These burials had been interred after the demolition of the chapel, barbican and forebuilding and are thought to date from the late 16th to the 17th centuries when the keep was used as a prison.<2> It, therefore, seems possible the the human bone could derive from further disturbed burials in this area, as the bunker is just 5m to the south of the chapel.
