Full Description
Trench J1 (Area J) contained two Roman burials - one inhumation (JF107) and one cremation (JF106/JF108). The inhumation burial lay mainly outside of the trench and so only the skull was present in the evaluation trench. The cremation vessel was found upright in pit JF106. There were nails associated with it, possibly from an associated wooden lid. The Roman inhumation was cut by Roman pit F1002 which contained iron hobnails, redeposited either from burial JF107 or another nearby inhumation. The cremation vessel was in a pit containing 2nd-century AD material, and the pot itself was of mid to late 2nd-century AD date. An almost complete Roman white-ware flagon was found in a residual context in the centre of the trench. It is likely that this pot has been displaced from a Roman inhumation burial or cremation.<1>
Subsequent excavation (ECC2981, Area J1) took place in 2004-5; 361 burials and burial-related features were found in Area J1.<2>
