Full Description

Around 1620 a more adventurous scheme was attempted, a syndicate of businessmen built in Chiswell Meadow the Town Water House (from where water was pumped to a cistern in the area of Papillon Road). But in 1633 the Lucas family who owned Lords Land cut the pipes in two, pipes cut off again by Parliamentarians in siege, using lead to make bullets. <1> The water house can be seen on the siege map. <2>
