Full Description

In 1821 a great many well-hewn fragments of a stone called swanage, from a place in the Isle of Purbeck found. This included a fragment of Purbeck marble tombstone 9 x 10 " with all margins damaged; the letters retain traces of red paint. Found close to the Colchester Sphinx in the grounds of the hospital. Now in Colchester Museum. Reads '...centurion with one promotion...centurion with one promotion in the...Legion...centurion of the Third Legion Augusta...centurion of the Twentieth Legion Valeria Victrix, born at Nicaea in Bithynia, served...years, lived...years....death...'<1>
