Full Description

Finds from archaeological test pits to the rear of 21 Middleborough in 1999 included Roman material- pottery, brick, oyster shell and three pieces of hypocaust flue tile. Two large timbers were recovered which may have been from a Roman wharf. Also a large quantity of leather pieces including shoe soles of late 14th century date, offcuts from leather working and an unusual piece consisting of two straps held together by a thong. The layer with the leather also contained 16th-17th century pottery so the leather is slightly residual in this context. 13th-14th century pottery was also found.<1>
