Full Description

A small evaluation trench (6.5 x 1.5m in area) on a plot to the south of 26 West Lodge Road revealed a Roman cremation burial F3, probably of 1st century AD date. The top of the grave (0.4-0.5m below ground surface) had been disturbed by past activity, leaving only the lowest 20cm intact. This consisted of an oval pit with a centrally placed pot (coarse grey ware jar), within which was found a quantity of cremated bone (a total of 0.718kg of cremated human and bird or small mammal bone from inside the vessel) and a broken clay lamp (almost complete picture lamp of Loeschcke’s Type I).<1>
