Full Description

In 1969 two workmen uncovered a coin hoard when digging a pit for an elevator shaft. The hoard consisted of 14,065 silver coins of the time of Henry III and about 20 forgeries buried in a lidded lead canister. Part of this hoard had been buried in 1256, but was increased some twelve years later by the addition of a large sum of freshly minted coins. The British Museum and Colchester Museum retained part of the hoard and the remainder was returned to the finders. The find spot of this hoard was twenty feet south of the shop front, seven feet west of the property boundary with no 25 and seven feet deep.<1> See also MCC2659.<2>
