Full Description

Finds from the Guilford Road estate point to the presence of an Anglo Saxon burial ground.

Two early 5th century burial groups were recovered from just outside the north-east corner of the town walls in 1971 & 1972. One group consisted of a cruciform brooch, two rings and a fragment of brooch spring. The second a cruciform brooch, seven beads, a silver finger ring, a siliqua of Valens pierced twice for suspension and a fragment of skull bone belonging to a Woman of 50-70 years of Age. <1><2>
