Finds suggesting Anglo-Saxon burials have been recovered from the Union Grounds (Now St Mary's Hospital).

Saxon leaf shaped spearhead, found at Union COLEM1930.693 <1>

Two brooches were found by workmen on the site of the Union House in the mid 19th century. Drawings of the brooches were made at the time by local archaeologist William Wire and included in his album. In the British Museum there is a brooch which matches very closely one of those drawn by Wire (OA270) <2><3>
