Full Description

A 17th century house at the corner of Scheregate and St John's Street, there is some confusion over the internal divisions of this property as the numbering has been changed. For the purposes of the UAD the current properties No 4a Scheregate and 28a St Johns Street are placed together. It is not clear whether the DOE numbers No 4 and 3a refer to the current 4a or both 4a and No 28a.

RCHME survey of house and shop at the corner of St Johns Street. It 'was built probably in the 16th century. The upper storey projects on the South and East sides with an original heavy diagonal bracket at the angle, carved on both faces with conventional foliage and springing from a moulded capital. Inside the building is an original beam carved with foliage, but not in situ.' <1>

DOE survey of No 4 Scheregate. Grade II. Corner house with No 3A, ground floor modern shops. Dated 1656 timber-framed and plastered. Tiled roofs. Two storeys, attics and cellars. Wings extend north and west. Upper storey projects on east and south sides of No 4 with heavy diagonal bracket to the south projection and similar brackets at angles of gable on east side.<2>

DOE survey of No 3A Scheregate. Grade II. Corner house with No 4. Ground floor modern shops. Dated 1656 timber-framed and plastered. Tile roofs, 2 storeys, attic and cellars. Wings extend north and west. Upper storey projects on east and south sides of No 4 with heavy diagonal bracket at angle springing from a capital carved with conventional foliage. Carved bracket to south projection and similar brackets at angles of gable on east side.<3>

DOE handwritten note in the Museum Greenback recording of No 28A St John's Street. Grade III 'Adjoins 4 Scheregate, probably C17'. There is some confusion with the listing as the numbering of Scheregate has changed.<4>
