Full Description

Early reference to Culver Lane now Culver Street in 1334.<1><2>

At some stage the High Street seems to have been widened to create a market place. This must have been a radical operation since it would involve the realignments of the frontages along much of the street, and any buildings on these frontages would have to be demolished. Culver Street was laid out as a back street terminating properties on the south High Street frontage. The east end of Culver street does not bend around the castle bailey like High Street does suggest it was in position before the late 11th century.<3>
