Monument record MCC236 - 17th century house, Culver Street, Colchester (site of)

Summary

17th century house, at the corner of St Nicholas Street and Culver Street East, Colchester, now demolished. Note that the accurancy of this description is now in doubt, if this description relates to 5-6 St Nicholas Street (formerly Jacks). This work has shown that 5 St Nicholas Street was probably built in the late 15th century, followed by 6 St Nicholas Street in the late 16th or (more probably) early 17th century.

Full Description

17th century house, now demolished.

RCHME survey of house, 'at corner of St Nicholas Street is of three storeys with two gables on the W front. The second storey projects on the W and S sides and the two gables also project on large shaped brackets'.<1>

The accuracy of this record, however, is in doubt because a detailed survey was made of Jacks, 5-6 St Nicholas Street (which is at the corner of St Nicholas Street and and Culver Street East), in 2017 (ECC4001). This showed that 5 St Nicholas Street was probably built in the late 15th century, followed by 6 St Nicholas Street in the late 16th or (more probably) early 17th century.<2>
