Full Description

A watching brief was maintained during the construction of an extension to the south side of Abbeygate House, St John's Green. The bottom of a cutting into the side of a bank of earth between Abbeygate house and Southway exposed a layer of tightly packed small stones which was probably part of a road which seemed to lie in a north-south direction. The layer was sealed by a 1.1m thick layer of sandy loam topsoil containing fragments of oyster shell, beneath which was undisturbed sand. "The stratigraphy seemed to indicate that the gravel feature was relatively early, perhaps Roman".<1>
