RCHME survey of former Workhouse Stockwell Street. 17th century building. <1>
The Listings put the date as 18th century however Dave Stenning of Essex County Council has written the following 'A remarkable C15th century three bay building with one large chamber on the first floor. The ground floor was built with an open arcade, fronting the two long narrow rooms, possibly workshops. The building has a simple, crown post roof, jowled posts and was 'open framed' to the west. The roof was hipped to the east over a pair of grouped, four light windows and presented a windowless, first floor, to the street. Described as 'the old wool hall' in a C17 deed in possession of the owner' (Stenning, forthcoming).
