Full Description
A Roman kiln was uncovered during initial groundwork for a sewer trench (Southern Outfall Sewer) and new road. The kiln was situated on the playing field of the Endsleigh School and permission was given by the headmaster to excavate. The work was undertaken on behalf of the museum by Miss Bushell with the assistance of Mr. J.B. Baird and others from the school. After the first kiln was cleared (kiln 26) two further Roman kilns were uncovered close by and these were excavated at a slightly later date. The two new kilns (kilns 27 and 28) shared a common stake-hole.<1> An annotated Ordnance Survey map in the Museum Resource Centre shows the exact location of a pottery kiln found in 1955.<2>
