Full Description

The western tower of the Castle barbican was found to stand partly on a block of Roman masonry, finely built of tiles, with very little stone. It was not possible for the excavators to reach the north end of this, but the width was 4ft 9" and the length not less than 9ft. This, together with a patch of concrete floor observed south -east of the bailey chapel, led Rex Hull to surmise that a plinth could have been situated here, supporting an equestrian statue.<1>
