Full Description

A Roman brick drain was excavated south of the Temple of Claudius (MCC1830). A large well-dressed stone , measuring 2ft 5" long by 18" wide and 4.5" thick was uncovered. In the centre of it was a round hole 6.5" in diameter, with a 3/4" rebate around it. The stone covered the corner of a vaulted drain in the manner of a manhole-cover. The drain itself had been well robbed. The main construction was of small septaria and ragstones with some tile, mostly broken, with a tile vault, well executed; the interior walls were plastered.<1>
