Full Description
A Roman masonry building situated along the northern edge of Insula 18. The building had been badly affected by later robbing.
The building was discovered during excavations at the NCP car park site on North Hill in 1965 (ECC949). The remains which were uncovered were believed to have formed the 'back premises of a house fronting the Roman street beneath the modern High Street'.
The building stood on a thick layer of clay make-up into which were dug the foundations of an east-west wall, with a mortar floor to the north. A large east-west robber-trench also belonged to this building and foundations running north-south probably represented the buildings west wall. After an unknown period the building was substantially remodelled with the demolition of walls and levelling of the site with clay after which two walls were built at right angles. Both had been robbed-out. One of the rooms of the re-modelled building was surfaced with black and red tiles in a herringbone pattern. and another room contained a masonry drain. The floors in the rooms were later renewed with opus signinum. Lying on these floors were late 3rd and early 4th century coins and pottery.<1>
