Full Description

A substantial Roman town house situated on the site of the Old Post Office (Subject to recent evaluation and excavation in 1999 & 2000, not yet published). The most distinct feature of the house was a sunken bath with tessellated covering.

In 1934 the site was examined prior to the construction of the then new G.P.O site. A broad band of land along the east side of the area, bordering Head Street had been severely disrupted by a series of cellars belonging to the old buildings. Behind this other areas were inaccessible due to extensive dumps of building material but an E-W trench was cut across the centre of the site. The maximum depth of excavation was 8 ft. below which the pottery was entirely Roman but with no notable stratification. At the west end of the trench the remains of Roman walls led to the discovery of a semicircular masonry structure lying 6ft 6in from the surface.<1>

The D-shaped bath is now thought to be a garden feature. It was removed prior to rebuilding work at Head Street and is housed at Jarmin Road pending relocation to the Roman Theatre garden in Maidenburgh Street (29/1/2001).
