Full Description

The remains of a mosaic pavement discovered during excavations at 60 North Hill in 1945 (ECC862). The surround was of large red tesserae, the mosaic panel in the centre having been largely destroyed. A gap in the north east corner of the pavement had been repaired with a cobbling of large pebbles which the excavator took to be medieval in date. The mosaic had been uncovered previously and possibly more than once. It lay less than a foot beneath the surface and had been used as the floor of a 16th-17th century midden heap.<1><2>
