Full Description
A watching brief was held during underpinning operations along the northern and eastern walls of No's 9 and 10 Vint Crescent, Lexden. Workmen, who were digging trenches by hand, discovered a number of Roman cremation vessels forming part of a Roman cremation cemetery. The contractor’s trenches showed that there was an exceptionally deep layer of greyish brown sandy loam overlying the natural. The soil was indistinguishable from topsoil and was about 2.0m deep. The ground appears to have been extensively disturbed in the past. However, several of the pots were upright and in situ indicating either an unusually deep accumulation of topsoil in the area or that the cremations had been dug into an earlier, soil-filled feature such as a sand or gravel pit. The vessels were found in three separate trenches.<1>
