Full Description
During excavations at Lewis's Gardens in 1955 (ECC667), a 2nd century Roman building (House I) was discovered lying less than two feet beneath modern ground level. The building was a simple two-roomed structure, the smaller room measuring 7ft. 6in. by 16ft. 6in. and the larger one to the south measuring 14ft. by 16ft. 6in. No outer walls had survived but there were slight indications of footings for the western wall and in the northern wall trench. The superstructure was probably built of timber and the internal partition wall was almost certainly of wattle-and-daub because wall plaster survived to a height of 9in. on either side of the partitions wall trench. All the timbers had either decayed or been removed when a later building (MCC1681) was erected on the site. The north room had a floor of pebbles set in mortar whilst the one two the south had a floor of opus signinum. The building was dismantled at some point in the 2nd century<1>
