Full Description

RCHME survey of the Gate House and house adjoining. The house is' two storeys with attics, timber framed and plastered; the roofs are tiled. The main block was built late in the 16th century or early in the 17th century, but in the second half of the latter century the S front was rebuilt and an L shaped addition made on the N side. The upper storey projects on the whole of the S front and has a moulded bressumer and large shaped and moulded brackets; a wall-post at the East end has a panel with the initials and date WBS 1680 (probably for William Boys and Sarah his wife). The four gables also project and have a moulded bressumer and barge boards with carved pendants. The wall faces below the gables are treated with rusticated plasterwork. There are four projecting bay-windows on the first floor, and in the middle is an oval window with a moulded frame. There are also three projecting bays on the ground floor, the space under the fourth above being occupied by a cart way. Inside the building there is some late 17th century panelling and a door of the same date. Condition - Good'.<1>

DOE survey of No 83 (Gate House) & 84 High Street (East Lodge). Grade I. C16 and C17 building with fine C17 plastered front. Built for William and Susan Boyes. William was a baymaker and mayor. Two storeys and attics, timber-framed and plastered, the roofs tiled. Very picturesque front with 4 projecting gables with moulded bressumer, barge boards and pendants the upper storey also projects with a moulded bressumer and brackets and a wall post dated 1680 and initialled BW and S at the east end, and there are 4 projected bay windows on the 1st floor; the ground floor has 2 projecting bay windows one entrance bay, and a cart entrance. The plaster on the front is rusticated.<2>
