Full Description

A north-south Roman street discovered during excavations on the site of St Nicholas's Church in 1955/6 (ECC655). The street appeared to have been encroached by buildings on the west (MCC1565) and east (MCC1566 and MCC1567). The street showed in one section of the excavation as 'a heavily cambered bank of gravel 25 feet wide and nearly 2 feet in the middle. No drains, water-pipes or kerbs showed in the section.' The street was not laid upon the natural but on a layer of loam and gravel.<1>
