Full Description

During excavations on the site of St Nicholas's Church in 1955/6 (ECC655), evidence was found for one or more buildings which had been destroyed during the Boudican revolt. This evidence took the form of a thick deposit of burnt clay blocks, and a mass of pieces of painted wall-plaster, and fragments of columns which overlay a burnt timber? floor. The excavator speculated that this might have been a public building of some kind.<1>After the Boudican destruction the ruins of this building (s) was strewn over the adjacent street to the east (MCC1570).
