Full Description

During excavations at 61-2 High Street in 1983, several Roman and medieval features were recorded in addition to the main robbed-out Roman wall foundations (MCC1498, MCC1499, MCC1500). Roman features included a plinth, gully, post hole, pit and opus signinum floors as well as make-up and rubbish layers. During the subsequent watching brief an opus signinum floor with cavity beneath was observed. Other cavities present elsewhere on the site suggest that together with the floors they 'may have been part of a hypocaust belonging to a public bath house?'. A Roman water-main collar was also found on the south side of the site. In addition to the robber trenches, medieval features included two cess pits, two pits and a latrine which was backfilled with material dating to 1500-1525.<1>
