Full Description

Foundations are recorded east of Butt Road on the 1876 OS Map (1:2500), 'Roman foundations found AD. 1875'. The exact location of the discovery is unclear; it has been plotted in the UAD in the area of the parade ground of the Artillery Barracks but the text on the OS map is written on the west side of Layer Road and could lie to the west of the barracks. <1>

Cutts (1889) shows a piece of wall running north-south with a short eastwards return at each end - possibly a tomb.<2><3>

No evidence, however, was found of this wall in the Colchester Garrison trial-trenched evaluations in the area of the parade ground show on the 1875 Os map (stage 1 a and Stage 1b of Alienated Lane Area H).<4><5>
