During the excavation of a pipe trench in Castle Park (ECC375), 1983, observations were made of a number of different Roman and later features in addition to the main structures such as walls, pavements and roads. What was possibly the Flavian town ditch (MCC539) was found to have been cut by a large post-Roman pit. Further north a ditch or large pit (5m wide) but of uncertain date was observed 8m north of the later town ditch (MCC659).
Within Insula 7, a gully/pit of probable Roman date was observed to the east of a Roman wall foundation (MCC1282). Further south there were traces of Roman make-up layers and ?pits, although these were much disturbed. A high concentration of gravels in the top soils may have indicated the location of gravelled yards etc. Traces of two mortar floors were also recorded. Many of the Roman wall foundations which were also discovered had been robbed out, presumably during medieval times. Most of the foundations and the robber trenches were found to cut mixed, yellowish-brown, sandy-clay loam make-up occupation lenses, burnt patches and possible small pits, 'indicating an earlier (?Flavian) phase of occupation. Some further traces of mixed dump material and a pit of probable Roman date were noted next to the edge of the inner bailey ditch (MCC1310).
Post-Roman topsoil or 'dark-earth' varied in thickness from approximately 1m thick. A post hole was excavated in the base of the inner bailey ditch.
South of the medieval lime kiln (MCC1317) was an associated pit, 1.5m deep.<1>
