During the laying of a sewer pipe in Castle Park in 1983 (ECC375), observations were made of an east-west Roman wall foundation. The foundation was 1.1m thick. It was of standard stone-and-mortar construction and consisted of septaria blocks with some tile set in a yellowish-white mortar. It was sealed by two courses of tile. This foundation together with two more foundations situated 7m to the north (see ELM507 and ELM508), and possibly a gravelled surface (see MCC1284), may have formed the remains of a building. The gravelled surface sealed a substantial deposit of sandy clay loam make-up material which the foundation was cut into. The remains of an infant burial (MCC1283) were recovered from this deposit immediately to the west. A further layer of sandy clay loam sealed the foundations and gravelled surface and may have represented demolition debris from the building.<1>
