Full Description

The remains of a medieval house of three phases was excavated at No.11 Magdalen Street in 1974 (ECC350). The house (Phase B, 15/early 16th - 1700) was described as being 'typical of 15th/16th century houses found elsewhere in Colchester... where the walls are built on mortared plinth, the floors are of sandy clay and the hearths incorporate upright fragments of peg-tile. The building may have been predate by an earlier structure (see MCC1248) and certainly sealed the southern side of an infilled hollow way (see MCC1244).
Parts of two mortared plinths survived in addition to a sandy clay floor and substantial hearth at the buildings east end. East of the hearth was a brick drain The latest dating evidence for the structure was from the 15th to early 16th centuries. The building went through a phase of redevelopment sometime after AD 1700 before it was finally demolished in the 19th or early 20th century when a brick built house was constructed on the site.<1>
