Full Description
During excavations at Oaks Drive in 1973 a Roman pottery kiln (Kiln 34) was examined (Colchester Archaeological Trust Kiln A). The kiln was one of three (see also MCC1227 and MCC1228) and seemed to have been operated as a pair with the latter (Kiln C). Only the bottom 0.3m of the kiln survived. it was pear-shaped with a single flue, constructed of clay and set into the ground at an indeterminate depth. The kiln had a long clay pedestal attached to the rear wall. A range of products was produced with the only notable exception being Samian ware.<1>
