Full Description

During excavations at the Cups Hotel Site in 1973-4 (EVT3008) a post-Boudican Roman building was discovered (Colchester Archaeological Trust Building 153). The building was represented by a hearth and a single wall which survived as a stump of sandy clay a few centimetres high. There was no indication of wattle suggesting the wall had been made of sun-dried blocks. The area to the north appeared to have been a garden.<1> (ELM287 and ELM505, a Roman pavement and wall respectively, may have belonged to this building or its successor MON640).
