Full Description

Roman Street running east-west between Insula 31 & 23.

In July 1921 drainage trenches cut in the middle of High Street, 400ft west of the site of the East Gate, revealed a considerable length of the retaining wall of the Roman main street, with road metal on its south side. The wall was 2ft wide, 18" high and carefully levelled on top. The metalling was of gravel (including large stones) over successive layers if grouted stones and grey clay, to a total depth of about 2ft. Objects found are in the Museum . <1><2><3>
