Full Description

A Roman water main (F377) was identified during excavations at 7-15 Long Wire Street, 1979. The main cut the demolished remains of the Legionary fortress annexe rampart. The water-main was of the type well-known from better preserved examples found during earlier excavations in Colchester, especially at Balkerne Lane. An iron collar lay in situ. The water-main had been set in a shallow trench. Both the trench and the water-main seemed to stop about 1.5m short of the southern side of a modern cellar. Their absence here may indicate that the main terminated in this area or that the two features were to faint to trace.<1>
