Full Description
In February 1948 a shaft 8ft E-W by 6.5ft N-S was dug in the NW corner of the motor transport yard of the Police Station. The trench of a wall 2ft wide ran N-S very slightly oblique to the shaft. Its bottom was 7ft from the modern tarmac surface. On its west side a room had been paved with red tesserae on a poor base of yellowish mortar only 2" thick. The pavement was 50" from the surface and was irregularly broken. On the east of the wall had been a floor, of which 3" of very good white mortar remained. It probably supported a better pavement, possibly decorated, but no tesserae were found. It lay 4ft from the surface i.e. 2" higher than the red floor. It was broken away at the north end. Medieval pottery was also found. <1>
