Disarticulated skull discovered on the East Mersea foreshore (Mersea Flats), and radiocarbon dated to the (late) middle Iron Age, c.130m from the (2020) shoreline and to the southwest of Cooper Beach Holiday Park.

Full Description

Disarticulated skull discovered on the East Mersea foreshore (Mersea Flats), and radiocarbon-dated to the (late) middle Iron Age, c.130m from the shoreline (measaured in 2020) and to the southwest of Cooper Beach Holiday Park (approx. TM 04953 13290). Discovered by the 17th October 2016 by Daniel French, a local oysterman. Radiocarbon dating was undertaken by the CITiZAN project, which provided a date of 390 BC (to be confirmed with dating certificate).<1>
At the time of record compilation (12th May 2020), the skull was in the possession of the Essex Police, to be transferred (in due course) to Mersea Museum for curation
