Element Group record MCC10255 - Three shallow pits and possible shell midden, Rewsalls Lane, East Mersea

Summary

Three small, shallow features/pits containing deposits of poorly fired red clay, possibly relating to salt production, were recorded in an area of former grazing marsh, during the construction of a borrow pit for a boating lake. In addition, a possible shell midden was observed in the edge of the borrow pit.

Full Description

Three shallow pits, [516], [518] and [520], were recorded in the southern part of the borrow pit area. The pits were 100% excavated but no finds were present in any of their fills. The largest, [516], measured 1.6m x 2.2m in area, irregular in plan with gentle sides and flat base. The fill (515), 0.10m thick, consisted of a stiff mid reddish-brown clay with frequent daub and burnt clay. The report states that 'these do not represent firing in-situ but are reminiscent of the same material that forms the ‘red hills’ located 200m to the east and north-west respectively [MCC10099 and 10110], which are an accumulation of the briquetage of the dismantling of prehistoric or Roman salt making features'. A sample taken from one of the features yielded no environmental remains and, despite its appearance, a fairly low percentage of fired clay fragments.<1>

In addition to the discoveries made by the archaeological contractor, a local resident observed (and photographed) a layer, or potential midden, of shells (certainly oyster) on the east edge of (and truncated by) the borrow pit, to the south of the red hill. The midden was estimated to be c.0.27-0.30m thick (max.). Unfortunately, this deposit was not recorded by the archaeolocial contractor.<2>
