Full Description

Meanee and Hyderabad Barracks (site of) located on the east side of Mersea Road, Colchester.<1>

The Meanee and Hyderabad Barracks were located within the original boundaries of the first permanent Colchester Camp (1855-56) and retains the E to W and N to S axes. The OS maps show the evolution of its plan, with an original six-block layout of timber huts, hospital (in the north), parade ground (along the east side), main entrance on the east side opposite the church (MCC3473). Between 1896 and 1904 the old wooden huts on the Ordnance field were replaced by the brick buildings of Hyderabad and Meeanee barracks, with trees and avenues.

In 2000, a historic building assessment was carried out on the Officers' Quarters (HYD 8; MCC3056), Accommodation and Dining Block (HYD 11; MCC3057), Officers' Quarters (MEE 17; MCC3055), Present Guard House (MEE 1; MCC3053) and Original Guard House (MEE 3; MCC3054). All of these have been subsequently recorded in detail (in 2013) and all except MCC3057 (demolished) have been converted.<2>

The area of the barracks (Colchester Garrison Alienated Land Area A1) has been also the subject of considerable below-ground archaeological investigation in 2011 (Sites A - K, ECC3852-ECC3862).<3>
