Full Description

Undated cropmark defining a (elongated) sub-triangular-shaped (with curved corners) enclosure c.5.5ha. in area on the north edge of Sampson's Creek (and Ray Channel). The feature is shown on the Peldon Tithe Map (1838), referred to as New Piece (No. 392) and also the OS County Series Epoch 1 1:2500 (1874-87). A drainage channel and earthwork bank extend northwards from the NW corner of the enclosure, and one from the NE corner. The enclosure appears to be an area of raised, possibly reclaimed, land in an area of low-lying saltmarsh (referred to as Horse Marsh on the Tithe Map, No. 390 and 393). It is adjacent to the NE of Sampson's Creek (which looks like an artificial enlargement of Sampson's Fleet, possibly a quay), and might possibly have a functional relationship with it.

The ditch shows clearly as a cropmark feature on a 2005, 2009, 2014 and 2018 (vertical) air photographs, although the south end of the enclosure has been cut off/eroded by the sea defence and cut off channel behind it.<1> The ditch is also defined as a low earthwork on the 25cm resolution LIDAR along The Strood.
