Full Description

A narrow circular gully or ring ditch with a highly compacted gravel base, c.6m in diameter. The feature was interpreted as a WWII anti-aircraft gun installation, although it was undated.<1>

Note: The Chapman & André Map of Essex (1777) shows three windmills on the gravel plateau east of Mersea Road, and it is possible that this feature relates to one of these.<2> It seems unlikely that it is associated with the Anglo-Saxon cemetery, with ring ditches surrounding a burial, defined c.90m to the west in Site A (MCC10073), as no burials were defined in Sites B and C (ECC3853 and ECC3854).
