Full Description
A 26m length of ditch CF3, aligned ENE to WSW, was defined within Site C. This ditch, 1.9m wide and 0.5m deep, was also identified as F182 in 2010 T66, on the east side of Site C and as F151 in 2010 Evaluation T5 to the immediate west. The same ditch alignment was traced as CF3 80m to the SW (F213 in T12), and 130m to the WSW in the Site K excavation as KF17 (see MCC10080), giving a total ditch length of at least 160m WSW – ENE. The dating of the ditch is problematical. There was Roman material from the fill of the ditch but also a piece of peg-tile in CF9, and therefore the dating of the ditch could potentially be post-medieval. However, the peg-tile could be intrusive.
A post/pit alignment comprising 14 pits, c.1.5-2.0m apart, was defined along the N. side of the ditch, c.1m from the upper edge of the pit: CF6, CF9, CF18, CF20, CF21, CF25, CF27-CF33. Typically, these post-pits were 0.76m to 0.84m wide and 0.12m to 0.16m deep. The only pits with finds in Site C were CF9 (1 fragment of peg-tile), CF20 (a shattered flint, presumably prehistoric), and CF21 (1 sherd of Roman pottery). However, CF6 produced a possible Iron Age sherd (F150 in evaluation T5; MCC10076).<1>
Note that the ditch and pit alignment were also defined in Site K.
