Full Description

Archaeological monitoring and recording by Colchester Archaeological Trust defined a layer of Roman accumulation L3 (c.230mm thick, medium brown silty-loam) sealing a medium orange-brown silty-loam L4 that might be the upper part of the interior rampart of the town wall, during the excavation of a new soakaway (1.2m x 1.2m in area), which was excavated to a depth of c.1.25m. L3 was below modern turf and topsoil (L1, c.600mm thick) and post-Roman subsoil (L2, c 250mm thick).<1>
