Description

Small exploratory trenches were dug mainly by machine to determine whether remains of the monastic buildings of St Botolph's Priory extended beyond the scheduled area and how susceptible these would be to any redevelopment of the site. Two foundations with adjacent floors presumably belonging to St Botolph's were located immediately south of the scheduled area at a depth of 1.0-1.4m. In the same area waterlogged remains were observed at a depth of 2.0m. No archaeological remains were found elsewhere because of substantial deposits of topsoil and the presence of underground chambers which were part of the Britannia works site.<1>
