Description

Four trial trenches were dug on a plot of land to the north of Lockhart Avenue and West of the Chantry, prior to its redevelopment. These were dug by the rear bucket (0.5 metre wide) of a J.C.B. Particular attention was paid to the north-east corner of the site, due to the proximity of pottery kiln 7 (discovered in the 19th century). Tree cover prevented comprehensive coverage of the area. No significant archaeological deposits were found apart from a possible shallow ditch in trench 3. The natural subsoil was located at a depth of around 1 metre 10 cm.<1>
