Description

In 1940 the first of a stick of four bombs missed the Castle by inches and buried itself 33ft. from the centre of the north wall without exploding. The bomb disposal squad removed it by digging a hole 6ft 6" square, when it was discovered that the bomb had turned and shot horizontally, cutting a peculiar Roman drain.<1>
